Public Transit is all forms of shared transportation that are available to the public. In Hampton Roads, this includes bus, light rail, ferry, and paratransit (for travelers with special needs).

Passenger Rail Service
Beginning in 2009, the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) began investigating improved passenger rail service between Richmond and Hampton Roads as an extension of the Southeast High-Speed Rail Corridor.

Roadway Safety
There were 26,170 crashes in Hampton Roads in 2021, resulting in 16,531 injuries and 179 lives lost. Looking at these numbers another way, a crash occurred every 20 minutes throughout the region in 2021, with an injury occurring every 32 minutes and a fatality occurring every other day.
