By Dale M. Stith, Principal Transportation Planner
This Women's History Month, we’re thrilled to spotlight a figure whose journey embodies perseverance, innovation, and leadership: Dr. Camelia Ravanbakht. Her transformative work over three decades has profoundly influenced the transportation fabric of Hampton Roads, where she served with distinction as the Deputy Executive Director of the HRTPO.
Rewind to the early 1980s, a time when the transportation field was overwhelmingly male-dominated. Dr. Ravanbakht stepped into this landscape with a vision and a resolve that broke through the prevailing norms. Her trailblazing path from being the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from NC State (quite an accomplishment, given her native language was Farsi and she only spoke fluent French when she came to the U.S. for her Master’s and Ph.D.), to becoming an esteemed leader in her field, stands as a testament to her courage and brilliance.
But Dr. Ravanbakht’s impact extends far beyond her professional accolades. Her role as a mentor has illuminated the path for countless women in transportation, fostering a community where future generations can thrive. Her influence is woven into the region's infrastructure – through major projects like the bridge-tunnel system, regional transit, and regional trails, her expertise has been pivotal in creating connections across the region.
Camelia, from all of us at the HRTPO – especially Dale, Theresa, Kathlene, and Pavithra – we are profoundly grateful for your contributions. Your wisdom and guidance have not only been a guiding light for us but have empowered us to broaden the pathways for those who follow. Inspired by your mentorship, we are committed to expanding the trail you've blazed, ensuring it grows wider and more accessible for the next generation of women in transportation.
Let's celebrate Dr. Ravanbakht and the countless women like her who broke barriers, paving the way for future generations. #WomensHistoryMonth #WomenInTransportation #Trailblazer
