HRTPO staff regularly highlights select transportation projects that are currently being implemented within the Hampton Roads region. A major effort that has been underway for several years is Hampton Roads Transit’s (HRT) Victoria Boulevard Facility Upgrades – Phase 2 project.

The Victoria Boulevard facility was constructed in 1989 and serves as the primary operating maintenance division for all HRT transit operations on the Peninsula area of Hampton Roads. The buses served at this facility operate in Hampton and Newport News seven days a week.

The Victoria Boulevard Phase 2 project will complete renovations at HRT’s Northside operating base, reconfiguring the Daily Services Building to include an up-to-date cash vaulting system, addressing safety and technology needs, and installing American with Disabilities (ADA) compliant amenities. Further, Phase 2 will finish replacement of the existing roof which has already begun construction.  This work includes replacing both the flat and metal roofs on the building, upgrading metal wall cladding, and replacing all trim, gutters and drains, and tie-ins to the roof edges and fascia. Finally, a major electrification project will be advanced to provide the necessary infrastructure to support a fully electrified peninsula bus fleet in the future.  The project, when completed, will complete the modernization of HRT’s oldest operating and administrative facility and ensure that the facility is safe, efficient and optimized for HRT’s needs.
