HRTPO Staff regularly highlight a project that is currently being implemented in the Hampton Roads Region. The city of Suffolk is currently implementing an intersection improvement project at the Intersection of Bridge Road (Route 17) and Shoulders Hill Road.
This project will widen Shoulders Hill Road from two to four lanes approaching the intersection from the South. It will also widen Bridge Road from four to six lanes about a half mile east and west of the intersection. There will also be minor improvements to Knotts Neck Road
The project will additionally install three left turn lanes from westbound Route 17 onto Shoulders Hill Road; a free flow right turn lane from northbound Shoulders Hill Road onto Route 17 East and additional right and left turn lanes on Route 17.
Other project aspects include the installation of storm water management facilities and stormwater system improvements, curb and gutter, a raised median, street lighting, sidewalks, and traffic signal upgrades.
The total budget for this project is $36 million and is currently under construction and expected to be completed in the Spring of 2026.
